Technology Flattening Natural Cycles
Examines whether technology erases natural cycles or their evidence, and whether that loss outweighs the suffering those cycles imposed.
To flatten the physical evidence of natural cycles is a quieter ambition than conquering nature, and a more thorough one. The conqueror leaves a battlefield; the leveler leaves a smooth surface on which nothing seems to have happened at all. A heated room in February, a peach on the shelf in January, a city that burns at the same wattage at three in the morning as at noon—none of these present themselves as victories over anything. They simply remove the friction by which a body once knew where it stood in the turning of the year or the day. The flattening is not the destruction of a cycle but the sanding-down of its traces: the muffling of the marks that seasons, tides, growth, and rot once pressed into the world’s surface, until it stops recording them.
The image has teeth where it stays close to inscription rather than experience. For millennia the Nile flooded its valley every year, carrying silt from the Ethiopian highlands and renewing the fields it crossed; the delta grew because the river kept writing sediment into the sea. The Aswan High Dam, finished in 1970, stopped the writing: it traps the sediment upstream, the annual flood no longer reaches the delta, and the delta itself is now eroding, parts of it subsiding by roughly a centimeter a year with nearly a third of it within a meter of sea level. The same logic runs through a graded subdivision where the old drainage lines have been filled, through a harbor where a seawall freezes the line between land and water that tides used to negotiate daily, through fruit bred and refrigerated so that ripeness and spoilage no longer keep time. The flattening is literal in these cases: a curve of variation is pressed toward a constant, and the physical record of recurrence goes with it.
But the verb does more than describe; it judges, and the judgment deserves resistance. This is not a claim any single writer makes outright so much as a mood—the elegiac reading that treats a legible cycle as something a culture loses and should mourn. To call the smoothing a loss assumes the variation was worth keeping, and many of the cycles in question were not gentle. The seasonal round that left such beautiful evidence also meant the hungry gap of late winter and the flood that wrote its silt by drowning a field. Flattening those rhythms was not a failure of attunement but the entire point of agriculture, medicine, and engineering—the deliberate purchase of a flatter, longer, less terrifying life. An account that mourns the erased evidence without weighing what the evidence used to mean treats the legibility of a cycle as more valuable than the suffering the cycle imposed. Evidence is only ever valuable to a reader, for some purpose; the tree ring smoothed away is a loss to the dendrochronologist, not obviously to the tree or to anyone whose winters got warmer.
A slippage runs between flattening the cycle and flattening the evidence of it. The seasons still turn outside the climate-controlled mall; what has been flattened there is only the occupant’s contact with them; the planet keeps its orbit regardless. That is a story about insulation, about the senses narrowed by comfort—real, but reversible by stepping outside. A different and graver claim is that technology flattens the cycles themselves, and here the metaphor tends to invert. Measured by the energy it moves and the systems it touches, the burning of fossil fuels is arguably the largest human intervention into a natural cycle—the carbon cycle—and it does not flatten that cycle. It steepens it: the IPCC puts the increase in extreme rainfall at roughly four to eight percent for every degree Celsius of warming, alongside a jet stream that increasingly loiters and lurches. At planetary scale the machine does not iron the cycles smooth; it whips them into larger and less predictable swings. The intuition that technology pacifies nature into uniformity holds for the heated room and fails for the heated atmosphere, and the failure shows the image is built for the domestic interior and breaks at the scale where the consequences live.
The same technologies render most natural cycles visible at all. Milankovitch’s orbital rhythms—the slow wobble in Earth’s tilt and orbit that paces the ice ages—the sawtooth of atmospheric CO2, the El Niño oscillation, the deep pulse of glacial advance read out of ice cores: none of these are available to the unaided body keeping watch on its own valley. Instruments flatten the local, sensory evidence of cycles while amplifying, vastly, the evidence of cycles no human ever felt. So technology cuts both ways, erasing the inscriptions a person could once read directly and producing the only inscriptions by which the largest cycles can be read at all.
What survives the criticism is narrower and more honest than the original reach: that comfort has a cost in attention, that a life sealed against weather and season loses orientation, and that the smoothing of a landscape’s self-recording can destroy information and resilience we did not know we were keeping. What does not survive is the implied verdict that the unflattened condition was the better one. The attunement being mourned was rarely chosen; it was compelled by danger, and the people who lived inside the cycles spent most of their ingenuity trying to flatten them.
