DNA as Remix Culture
Analyzes how framing genetic engineering through hip-hop sampling rhetoric shifts power, consent, and ownership questions onto the body.

Genetic engineering usually speaks the language of Prometheus or the laboratory: hubris, precision, designer babies and optimization. “Bios O.S.” replaces the god and the lab coat with the sampler and the turntable. DNA becomes inherited material waiting to be reused. The engineer becomes a producer, taking what already exists and finding out what else it can do.
James Brown makes the comparison more than decorative. His recordings—“Funky Drummer,” “Funky President” and “Give It Up or Turnit a Loose”—supplied some of the most-used breaks in popular music. Producers built hip-hop, jungle, drum and bass and much else from them. Many early samples were taken without clearance or payment. Brown’s music generated new forms and new fortunes, while control over the value it created often lay elsewhere.
DNA as a “choice James Brown sample” therefore carries both the promise of remix and its oldest dispute. Sampling can release possibilities hidden inside familiar material. It can also turn someone else’s inheritance into raw material. The question is not only what can be made, but who has the right to make it, who bears the risk and who receives the gain.
The verbs trace a movement from continuity to rupture. “Re-sampled” and “recycled” suggest reuse: the old material persists inside the new. “Glitched” finds productive beauty in error. “Chopped and screwed” names DJ Screw’s Houston method of slowing records and cutting between copies until the source acquired a new weight and atmosphere. By the end of the sequence, the original has not vanished, but it has become hard to recognise.
Biology has always worked this way. Sexual reproduction shuffles two genetic libraries. Mutation introduces copying errors. Natural selection keeps some of them and discards others. Evolution is a remix without a producer: repetition, variation and selection carried across four billion years. Genetic engineers did not bring remix into a pristine system. They entered a process already under way, shortened its timescale and began choosing the edits.
That change matters. Natural processes do not justify deliberate ones, and speed is not merely a difference of degree. A mutation that spreads through a population over centuries is not ethically identical to an alteration designed in a laboratory, patented by a company or released into an ecosystem. A producer working on a track can stop, revise or discard it. A genetic change may reproduce itself.
The passage’s cheerfulness is therefore part of its unease. “There for the taking” makes appropriation sound like freedom. It treats the genome as available material before asking whose material it is. A person may consent to the use of a tissue sample, but descendants cannot consent to inheriting an edit. A species cannot negotiate the terms under which its genes are extracted, altered or owned. The language of remix makes biotechnology seem open and playful precisely where power may be least evenly shared.
Whether the comparison sounds liberating or ominous depends on whether one imagines oneself as the sampler or the sampled. Brown’s beats made new worlds possible. They also showed how easily creative freedom for one person can rest on another person’s loss of control. Once biology becomes music, the first question is not whether the track can be made. It is who owns the master.
